RESEARCH QUESTION

How to foster socialization in the age of technology consumption?

CONNECTIVITY OVER FOOD.

Through experiential restaurant design- the big idea is to utilize design theories in interior design to encourage socialization and experience in the personal tech-driven landscape we have created.

No hashtags. No scan this code.

Cultivated experiences with people over our biggest connector- food and drink.

FILENE’S WAITS FOR YOU

THE CONCEPT

A metaphor for the crossroads. The carpe diem message of Billy Joel’s 1977 song Vienna.

Filene’s is an opportunity to reminisce, an experience to slow down to connect with others through food.

THE MEZZANINE BAR & DINING EXPERIENCE

Mirroring the model of Filene’s multi-level department store, the fine dining experience at the restaurant’s main level conveys exclusivity through spaces that emphasize distinctively experiential and sensory design.

The mezzanine bar with its private seating and the observatory banquette seating design is intended to communicate this exclusivity through experience, utilizing all senses through taste, smell, and visual emphasis via light projection.

Light diffused through architectural ceiling elements that emulate the exterior canopies.

HISTORY BEHIND THE DESIGN

Filene’s department store was a major component in the fabric of Boston’s urban culture, located in the hub of Downtown Crossing.

Filene’s was a destination for all Bostonians alike, the upper floors catering to more luxury department store goods and a sense of exclusivity in contrast to the approachable bargains of the basement.

This division is emulated in the restaurant design, that exclusivity represented in the fine dining service at the main level and the basement cocktail lounge a more casual dining scene intended for the “common man”.

Boston’s character, loyalty, and the unifying of both the neighborhoods and the people are represented in the history and prime of Filene’s.

FILENE’S BASEMENT BAR

Bar design with integrated grill top component for a sensory food and drink experience, serving small bites accompanied by live music and a casual lounge atmosphere.

BOSTON NEIGHBORHOOD MARKET RENDERING // 2023 MARKER MEDIUM WITH PHOTOSHOP ENTOURAGE

HISTORY THROUGH FOOD

Neighborhoods represented include Fenway, Back Bay, the South End “Southie” and the North End.

Small bites range from Italian and Irish-origin bites to small items like soups, “chowdah” and sandwich representative of each region.

THE AUTOMATIC MARKDOWN BARGAIN STORE

Filene’s basement was the “store that invented the bargain”, an outlet intended for the “common man” in Its commitment to the accessibility of high-quality expensive items at a fraction of the price. Bostonians during lunch breaks, in-between shifts, and locals from surrounding neighborhoods all visited frequently.

The cocktail lounge design and neighborhood market are meant to communicate this approachability, the market structure a nod to the bargain bins themselves and allowing this same ease of grab and go for working Bostonians once more.

RESEARCH // DESIGN THEORY DRIVERS

MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness is an extension of ‘being in the moment’ it’s a feeling of being grounded in the space you’re in without distraction.

By taking time to socialize over a meal, you reconnect with your senses and slow down to bring your attention to the entire experience revolving around sharing

SOCIAL EATING

Implementing design and experiences that incorporate all the senses to ground you.

Furthers mindfulness and can improve the immersion experience of the restaurant, amplifying the food and social experience

AFFORDANCE THEORY

Communal eating increases social bonding and feelings of wellbeing, a sense of content and embedding within community.

Eating with others leads to a wider network capable of providing both social and emotional support

SENSORY DESIGN

Designing based on what the environment needs to provide the user, and how the perception of the environment leads to decision-making and a course of action.

By providing choice, a multitude of experiences to choose from guests will be able to customize their hospitality experience
