STUDIO III WORKPLACE DESIGN
BIRDHOUSE ARCHITECTURE
Design a co-working office space for architecture firm 'Birdhouse Architecture' at the head of Savannah's historic Forsyth Park.
Birdhouse Architecture is a haven for the collaboration of creatives and provides a workspace that accommodates neurodiverse users and the changing workplace environment as we return to work post-covid.

CANOPY
Like the layers of a forest tree, Birdhouse Architecture emphasizes creative growth and expansion by fostering a collaborative haven for creatives and clients.
Birdhouse Architecture demonstrates a co-working workplace design intended to create a sense of sanctuary, a canopy that demonstrates equity and accommodates a variety of users.
THE CONCEPT
GATHERING SPACE DIAGRAMS // 2022 REVIT PHOTOSHOP AND ILLUSTRATOR MEDIUM
Through space planning, spaces emphasize access to natural light at workstations, blending the indoors and outdoors for both air quality and light. The inclusion of plants and naturalistic materials such as woods and greens in combination with natural light benefits the user experience.
Focusing on users’ choice and customization within the space aspects, taking into account thermal and acoustical comfort
Centralized community spaces encourage WELL standards movement and nourishment with spaces like the game room, kitchen, coffee bar, and gathering space.

CONCEPT DIAGRAMS // APPLICATION
Inspired by the conversation pits of the 60s and 70s, this centralized conversation ‘perch’ is an elevated custom component that allows a sanctuary-like gathering place.
The perch furthers the concept of “Canopy”, a fabric acoustic canopy overhead to allow for acoustic mitigation and space for both compression and comfort.

Birdhouse Architecture’s office is meant to be a retreat from the shared space, intitating more intimate team collaboration for the designers.
There’s an emphasis on touch-down spaces, employing the option for hands-on design with plenty of room to spread out and pin up.

THE RESEARCH // DESIGN DRIVERS
SENSORY CHANGE
ACCOMMODATION AND INCLUSIVITY IN SPACES FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED VARYING STYLES OF STIMULATION.
Making adjustments accordingly to space in order to accommodate for those with varying sensory resiliency, dependent on space type.
Creating calm visual interest without overwhelming, a place to relieve stress for decompression and connectivity with others on their own terms. Design solutions explored were to promote both productivity and comfort in the space for both polar opposites in terms of individual needs.
Ideas explored were the use of natural materials and contrasting color pallets to create a secure calming environment. The idea is to ‘humanize’ the space, the impact of the ‘prospect refuge theory’ which is an attempt to promote a sense of security and self within a space for the user.
COMMUNITY
DECOMPRESSION AND CONNECTIVITY. A SENSE OF COMMUNITY-DRIVEN WORK.
Varieties of conference spaces and opportunities for leisure like a gathering space or game room, for both different functions and user comfort levels.
Design solutions to allow for places of leisure and collaboration between people, encouraging free-flowing creativity and inspiration from both rest and team building.
NEURODIVERSITY
ADAPTING THE ENVIRONMENT FOR VARIATION INSTEAD OF STANDARDIZATION.
Adapting the built environment for others, and accommodating the natural range of variation in human neurocognition.
Design solutions to ‘humanize’ the space, accentuating individuality and modularity so that users can have opportunities for choice to dictate their own personal comfort.
