SALVAGE
RETAIL & BAR DESIGN
THE BRIEF
Design a combined retail and coffee service commercial space.
‘Salvage’ is intended to focus on the sale of artisan goods, and honor European roots with indulgent small bites like cheese, chocolate, and coffee.
The client Claudia Gaetano is drawn to tradition, taking the old and making it anew. Going back to her roots, the client’s legacy with design is a major driver of her aspirations with her retail store. Both her family and her worldly travels influence the design, the idea of ‘Salvage’ being a return to tradition while employing adaptive reuse and innovation.

THE RETAIL DESIGN
Salvage is a combined retail store and coffee bar experience that pays homage to Italian culture and morals. In the overarching design, there’s an emphasis on a return to your roots, and rising from the ashes of what once was.
The architecture draws from old-world cathedral design, with influence from regions of Italy such as Tuscany or the cities of Florence and Venice. The added vegetation simulates a Tuscan villa, with vines and nature growing out of the cracks of the Italian cities.

The shape of the combined food service counter and coffee bar is inspired by the “apse” of Italianate cathedrals.
An apse is at the head of the space, usually at the end of the aisle or at a point where there would be something visually interesting such as a painting or statue- drawing your attention to the display or ceremony taking place.
The apse inspired the counters, where a focal point of the customer journey takes place enhancing the usual retail experience.
THE DESIGN FORMS

-
An apse is a semicircular recess, often covered with a hemispherical vault. Commonly, the apse of a church, cathedral, or basilica is the semicircular or polygonal termination to the choir or sanctuary, or sometimes at the end of an aisle.

THE LOUNGE DESIGN
The lounge and coffee bar is intended to emulate the smokiness of whiskey and the warmth of wine. The space is intended to be dramatic whether during the day for a cup of coffee or at night for espresso and a drink.
The barrel vault with a dark wooden coffered ceiling creates a more intimate space for the lounge that you can step away into.
PRELIMINARY SKETCHES / VOLUMETRICS
Salvage was a project Fall of 2021, inclusion of new elements and digital renderings becoming a passion project of 2022 to challenge the design from before.
The original renderings were done by hand, with design changes including but not limited to more creative ceiling elements and lounge experience. Original design solutions became preliminary and served as a jumping-off point for further exploration and growth in this project.
